COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING
One of The Fastest Growing Hobbies in the world
Documented by Timothy Draper
INTRODUCTION OF THE AUTHOR
Metal Detecting has become a fast-growing hobby in the last few years. Yearly reports show that 2020 was the best year yet and business professionals expect that 2021 will see even more new hobbyists in the treasure hunting community.
Treasures in America was born out of Timothy C Draper’s, (Tim) vision, passion, and drive for adventure, history, and lost treasures. Tim has been a treasure hunter for over 20 years and has had his fair share of excitement in his career. Tim is the Founder and CEO of the fastest growing online metal detector store in the United States.
“I hope this complete guide to metal detecting helps you find your way to adventure and points you in the right direction for information on metal detectors, what gear to buy, where to go metal detecting, and more. I hope you enjoy this article,” said Timothy Draper.
Let’s dive into this guide so you, as the reader, can plan for your new adventure. This guide will not only help beginners to do metal detecting, but it will also serve to help those who have been doing metal detecting for years. Like the title says, this is a complete guide to metal detecting.
WHAT IS METAL DETECTING?
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 1
Metal detection is not just an electrical device that you swing back and forth and lets you know if there’s something in the ground below. There’s a lot more to it. Science and modern day technology has made it easy for beginners and advanced users to set out and find treasures that have been lost. Rome was not built in a day and neither were metal detectors. It took many decades to get metal detectors where they are today.
In the 1980s, those who wanted to become detectorists used to have to attend classes from the manufactures to learn how to use them correctly. Today, beginners can buy a modern metal detector, put it together in a matter of minutes, and start finding treasures on their first day of hunting.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF METAL DETECTING
In the 1800s the gold rush was at its all-time high. Everyone that could travel was looking to strike it rich, looking for gold in the hills. That’s where the first metal detector came from, right? Wrong! Even though it may seem possible, the first metal detector was created for the purpose of helping one of the United States Presidents, President James Garfield. He was shot in the back and even though he didn’t die, the bullet was causing him serious health issues.
WHO INVENTED THE METAL DETECTOR?
Alexander Graham Bell was the first to create and design the metal detector. He hoped that it would help the doctors locate the bullet in President James Garfield, but the first metal detector failed. Later, President James Garfield died of a gunshot wound.
In 1931, Gerhard Fisher, the founder of Fisher Metal Detectors was granted the first patent on the first portable metal detector in the world. He made a discovery in his work on navigational systems and that’s when the very first metal detector came across the market. The treasure hunting world started to spread.
After Fisher Metal Detectors were born, many other metal detecting manufacturers started to appear. Brands like Minelab, Garrett, Whites, Bounty Hunter, and more. More brands have appeared in the United States like Nokta, XP Metal Detectors, Teknetics and there’s been a few great manufacturers that make metal detecting accessories like Coiltek.
WHEN WAS THE METAL DETECTOR INVENTED?
1931 by Gerhard Fisher, Founder of Fisher Metal Detectors and now a combined company named First Texas Products that also owns Teknetics and Bounty Hunter, along with a few more outdoor product brands. I bet Gerhard Fisher would have written a perfect complete guide to metal detecting.
IS METAL DETECTING WORTH IT?
I have spent time with people in their 20’s, as well as retired people, and all of them that start on this hobby of metal detecting and hunting for treasures have spoken very highly of their experiences. In fact, I enjoy talking with them because they all have that smile on their face when they are telling me about their experiences and their upcoming plans to go out in hopes of discovering something new.
Most of them seem happy with finding old coins in the park, hunting old ghost towns and finding relics, or even chasing old legends of outlaw loot buried, all the way to diving in the ocean looking for sunken Spanish ships.
Most of the detectorists that I know spend a lot of their time out in the field looking for their next find but they have also found many other outlets to stay connected on the internet. There are many groups on Facebook and other social media platforms. Some of them are making metal detecting videos and publishing them on YouTube. There are even treasure hunting shows and treasure hunting podcasts that have been growing in numbers over the years.
Is metal detecting worth it? I think the adventure and excitement that everyone has is enough but if that doesn’t get you excited enough, look into the next chapter with some of the greatest metal detector discoveries in the world.
METAL DETECTING FIND
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 2
I’d be willing to bet that there aren’t too many detectorists who haven’t found themselves daydreaming, even if only for a moment, about coming across that extraordinary find that makes headlines around the globe. It could happen to anyone at any time, you just need to get out there and give it a shot.
Whether it’s value or historical significance that drives you, most of us can’t deny that feeling of excitement we get from unearthing something that’s been lost and forgotten with time.
Some may think miraculous finds are a thing of the past. If so, think again, the possibilities are endless of what has yet to be discovered. They’re going to be made by someone, it might as well be you. Use this complete guide to metal detecting to help your search.
SOME WORLD FAMOUS METAL DETECTING FINDS [TOP 5]
THE MOJAVE NUGGET – SOLD FOR $400,000 USD IN 2014
In 1977, the largest gold nugget ever found in California was discovered by a prospector named Ty Paulsen. Ty decided to go metal detecting in the Mojave Desert which in turn served him well. This huge gold nugget chunk weighed in at 156 ounces, which inspired many prospectors to hunt the area in hopes to strike it rich. The gold nugget was later sold in October of 2014 for $400,000.00 to Margie and Robert Petersen. Sometime later, they made a generous donation by giving it to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Still today, it is on display if you would like to see it.
SANTA MARGARITA GOLD CHALICE – SOLD AT AUCTION IN NEW YORK FOR $413,000 IN AUGUST 2015
In 2008, a diver named Michael DeMar was searching and exploring the Santa Margarita shipwreck area of the Florida Keys. While discarding a beer can, his metal detector suddenly alerted him of a large gold target. That’s when he discovered that his detector found a gold chalice that was later determined from the shipwreck. August of 2015, the chalice was sold at a huge price of $413,000.00 dollars in an auction. Because of this discovery, many people decided to take up treasure hunting as a hobby with the dream of finding their fortune and glory. I mentioned it before, there are treasures everywhere, you just need to know where to look.
13 YEAR OLD BOY USING METAL DETECTOR FINDS 2 POUND METEORITE
Jason Lyons, a 13 years old boy, used his metal detector to discover a 2 lb. meteorite rock while prospecting with his dad in the desert of New Mexico. It was later determined by experts that the meteorite was most likely around 10,000 years old. It was easy for the metal detector to find the rock because it was made of a combination of metals like nickel and Iron. These elements are easily detected by all metal detectors.
This is a great story about a 13-year-old boy finding his treasure with a metal detector. It goes to prove that there’s adventure around every corner, you just must get out there and find it. Because meteorites are hard to come by, it makes the story even better.
HOXNE HOARD | BURIED TREASURE
Eric Lawes found what we can all consider as “buried treasure” with his metal detector. This is a story that we all dream about finding and why we all work so hard with our metal detectors. While Eric was searching for his friend’s lost hammer, his metal detector alerted him of a large find. He was lucky and in the right place because he discovered some silver spoons, gold jewelry, and large bags of gold and silver coins.
He reported his find to the authorities and the next day more was found. Around 8 lbs. of gold was unearthed from the ground by archaeologists along with 52 lbs. of silver. After some research, experts said that the treasure was most likely buried around 450 AD. Experts also determined the worth of the treasure around $2.59 million dollars.
THE GOLD BOOT OF CORTEZ
In 1989 a treasure hunter went to Radio Shack in Sonora Mexico to buy a metal detector, hoping that he would strike it rich. Even with old technology from the 1980s, his metal detector was successful in finding some great things like bullets, coins, and other metals.
One day, he was around 70 miles south of the Arizona border in Mexico searching around with his metal detector. This time, he found one of the most important gold nugget discoveries ever made. This gold nugget weighed in at 289 troy ounces which still today is the largest gold nugget ever found in the Western hemisphere. The other interesting thing about the gold nugget was the shape. It later took the name “The Boot of Cortez” because of the similarity of a Spanish Conquistador’s boot. The gold nugget was sold at an auction for 1.5 million dollars.
Many people ask me all the time “Is there still treasures and gold to be found in the world?” This story and many others like it prove my answers. Yes! There are still many, many treasures, gold nuggets, artifacts, and so much more to be found.
If you use this complete guide to metal detecting, you to could have a chance of finding something big!
HOW DO METAL DETECTORS WORK?
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 3
Metal detectors are a very advanced piece of technology. Not just anyone could tear one apart and create their own. They are all built to use frequencies that send waves into the ground and send them back to the coil. From there, the detector will decipher what metal it is and even how deep the target is in the ground.
Most modern day metal detectors can even discriminate between different types of metals so the detectorist user can eliminate not so valuable metals from valuable metals. The more you spend on a metal detector, the more effeminate it will detect, read deeper in the ground, find big gold nuggets, small gold nuggets, and much more. If you are new to the metal detecting world, reach out to the Treasures in America’s team customer service department and they will outfit you with the best metal detector for your needs, wants, and budget.
DO METAL DETECTORS DETECT ALUMINUM?
They sure can. Aluminum metal is a common metal to find, especially when you are in a high trash area like a popular park or a public place that gets a lot of visitors. Most modern day metal detectors will notify the user with a beep and target icon alert on the display screen of the metal detector. This makes it easier for the user that aluminum was discovered.
HOW DEEP CAN A METAL DETECTOR DETECT?
The average metal detector from $100 to $700 will detect from ground level to 6” – 9” inches. Keep in mind that many things can stand in the way of depth detection. The size of the target, the mineral deposits in the ground you are searching for, and other factors like radio waves, electrical pole lines, and more.
When you spend more money on a metal detector, let’s say from $1000 – $8,000, you will be able to detect targets deeper in the ground. Some metal detector brands make metal detectors for the purpose of seeking metal deeper into the ground. I will leave a list below for you to see some of the more popular deep seeking metal detectors.

CAN A METAL DETECTOR DETECT COPPER?
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 4
I’ll raise my hand for this question, and the answer is yes. Copper can easily detect copper because it’s a very high conductor and the highest resistivity and conductivity rates of metal will pick up on any metal detector greatly.
CAN METAL DETECTORS DETECT GOLD?
For sure! In fact, most brands make gold metal detectors. Which means they are fine-tuned for discovering gold. You can find other metals as well, but they are designed to look for gold rather than focusing on relics, jewelry, and more.
All metal detectors will find gold but a gold metal detector will perform much better when it comes to gold. Some of the gold detectors are better for some gold and some are better for big gold. Some metal detectors will do both. I will list a few popular metal detectors below so you can do some research for yourself.

HOW TO METAL DETECT LIKE A PRO
We all want to be good at what we do, right? This section of this article will help give you tips to help you metal detect like a pro. Pay close attention because these are trade secrets to have been used by treasure hunters for a very long time.
METAL DETECTING TIPS
Not all iron alerts are trash – When the iron function was introduced to the metal detecting world, it seemed that it was a great function. Eliminate all trash, right? The thing is, iron can be annoying but some great relics have been discovered that are made of iron. You decide. Should you dig it up or pass it up?
Do not give up on strong targets – even when that target seems hard to find and you have been digging and digging, do not give up on your target. If you receive a good strong beep, it’s in the ground and you don’t want to miss out on a great discovery. Use a good pinpointer to help you narrow down the target. Also, swing your detector over the hole you dug periodically to get a depth indicator.
Always carry extra batteries with you on the hunt – If your detector takes AA batteries or a rechargeable battery, make sure you have extras. There’s not a worse feeling than your detector dying early in the day before you are ready to quit detecting.
Take more than one metal detector with you – It’s always a good idea to have more than one metal detector with you. If you have an all purpose metal detector then a gold detector would be a good second. Another reason to have more than one is something might happen to your primary and if you have a secondary, you are still in the game. Many detectors brands and models work differently and it’s always a good idea to have two when you find hard to read targets.
Have the right digging tool for the job – It’s always a good idea to take several types of diggers with you on a hunt. You may hit soft dirt and you may find it hard to dig dirt as well. There are many types and shovels and diggers on the market. Research today to find the right ones for you.
Old mines and dumps can have gold – The old timers were good at mining but it’s always a great idea to scout and scan the mining area with your metal detector. You may find the gold that was missed in the old days and you could also find old relics that were left behind.
Hunt after the rain – Not only will the ground be softer after a rainstorm, your metal detector will work better when the ground is slightly wet. The wet ground provides better conductivity and your metal detector will find targets better with stronger beeps.
BEACH METAL DETECTING
Metal detecting on the beach can be a very rewarding and exciting experience. Not to mention that a day on the beach can be beautiful and relaxing. This next section can help you be more successful on your journey.
BEACH METAL DETECTING TIPS
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 8
Make sure you get the right metal detector – There are many metal detectors on the market but some of them are not great on the beach. The salt in the water and the sand itself can disrupt the metal detector. Make sure you do some research and buy a metal detector that is beach-worthy.
Dig up everything – When you are beach detecting, make sure you dig every time your metal detector alerts you. Don’t skip any beeps. You never know what you will find.
Private beach and private land permits – Always make sure you get permission and/or permits before metal detecting a beach. Do your homework and make sure you follow the rules. There’s nothing worse than having fun until you are caught doing something illegal.
Get to know your beach metal detector – It helps a lot to know your metal detector. Understand the different beeps and alerts that it gives you. Practice makes perfect, so it’s a good idea to spend some time with your detector before you get good with it.
The right digging tools for the beach – A metal detecting sand scoop is a very useful digging tool when you are hunting the beach. Make sure you shop around for the right one that fits your needs and budget.
BEST PLACES TO METAL DETECT FOR GOLD
To find gold you must be in an area that gold has been discovered or is baring gold. There’s plenty of gold maps of all the states in America. It would be a great idea to research your area and state to see if you can have a chance of striking it rich.
Old mining claims and lost mine areas – are a great place to search for gold. Most states have historical records of mining claims and that would help you get started in your area. Once you find an old gold mining claim, it’s a good idea to scan the old mine dumps. The old-timers may have missed some gold.
Detect rivers in gold areas – If you have a waterproof gold metal detector, then you can detect in the river beds and see if you can find gold. It’s not a bad idea to also gold pan the sand bends in the river to see if you found a gold source.
Stake a gold mining claim – If you find a gold source, check with your state on how to stake a claim. Most states have not changed their mining laws since 1871, so it’s easier than people think.
Buy the right gold metal detector – All metal detectors will find gold but a gold metal detector is fine-tuned for top performance when it comes to finding gold. Do your homework because the more you spend, the better the gold detector will be. Some are made for deep seeking, some are made for finding small gold, and some are made for finding big gold. Pick the right gold metal detector for your needs and budget. The gold metal detector you choose will be the heart and soul of your adventure. Complete guide to metal detecting 2021.
METAL DETECTING FOR COINS
Always choose the right metal detector for you. There are many great coin metal detectors on the market and you should understand that the metal detector you choose will be one of the most important things you do.
When it comes to finding coins – it’s a good idea to research and think about where people may have dropped coins. Old places like ghost towns, parks, old abandoned buildings, even where a circus has been set up and left.
Pick the right coin metal detector – Always choose the right coin metal detector for your needs. There are many on the market but all metal detectors from brands to different models perform differently. Do your due diligence and pick the right one for you. You may want to research the depth that the metal detector can detect as well.
Research history – Are you searching in the right place? There are all kinds of legends and stories of outlaws burying the coins. There are also many stories of the old homesteads where the family’s buried their coins in the backyard. Think like a treasure hunter and track down those stories and locations. You may just hit the jackpot if you put the time into it.
Bring extra gear – Always bring extra batteries, car chargers if needed, digging tools and shovels, and an extra metal detector. Many unexpected things can happen while you are out in the field and there’s not a worse feeling than coming home empty handed because you didn’t plan for your trip. Think like a boy scout. Prepare for the best and the worst and in most cases, you will be in good hands.
Always dig up the target – When you are out in the field and it’s not a heavy trash area, dig up the target when it beeps. Metal detector alerts can get overwhelming when you are hunting in a heavily populated place but when you are out in the woods or desert and there’s not much sign of high traffic, dig it up. Don’t give up on your dig either. Use a good metal detector and pinpointer to locate the target. Trust me. You spent the time to plan and travel and now you are out in the field, don’t let a great discovery pass by you because you get a little impatient.
RIVER METAL DETECTING
You can find all kinds of artifacts, gold, relics, and so much more in the rivers with your metal detector. Water tends to move objects downstream and not everyone has a waterproof metal detector, so rivers can be a great place to search. Hunting places that no one else has done is important too. The quality of your metal detector is also important.
If someone has been in the area with a metal detector before you, with a metal detector that doesn’t perform as well as yours, there’s a good chance that they may have missed something that your metal detector will not. Keep that in mind when you are choosing the right metal detector for you.
Check the river bends, where the flow of the water slows down because sometimes objects can be found in those bends. Make sure that you have at least a waterproof coil, or better yet a waterproof metal detector so you can submerge the detector in the water in deeper areas.
Many people have found all kinds of treasures in the water. The possibilities are endless and most likely not played out in your area.
Another good tip is to do off trail hiking around a river bed. Try to go metal detecting to the hard to reach areas. Not everyone has the heart to work hard so if you do you may find something really great.
Magnet fisher is a great and growing hobby as well. You may want to look into that. Just another idea to make your scouting more fun and rewarding. Besides, adventure and excitement is what we are doing while we are out in the field. The treasure is just an added bonus! Find your adventure today and research your next move.
BEST PLACES TO METAL DETECT
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 9
Where is the best place to go metal detecting? That’s a great question.
Think about a place that could have a treasure. Check your local urban legends and history. Don’t forget about the lost history of unspoken history as well. There’s a lot of lost history that is not mentioned in history books. Word of mouth is often key.
For example, when I hear a new story, I check all the sources I can. That’s including old timers that have lived in the area for a long time. Even better, an old timer family that has lived in the area for many generations. This is one of those times where you need to think beyond what others have thought before you. There’s plenty of wilderness out there that has not been explored or metal detecting.
Research, research, research. That is the key. Yes if you have a great and expensive metal detector, odds are your metal detector can find something that another metal detector couldn’t. This is a great technique to do, but if you do find an area that is hard to reach, not for the faint hearted people, then you may discover something great. You may find a place where you have to drive to, place your vehicle in 4-wheel drive until you can’t drive anymore, and continue on foot.
Now that would be a great place to start. Do your history and research. For example, a ghost town is a great location but in the highly traveled areas, there’s a good chance that many people have already been metal detecting there. What if you explore and metal detect off the beaten trail around that ghost town? Do you think you can find something that way that no one else has found?
What I’m trying to do is to get you to think as a professional treasure hunter. Many treasure hunters have found awesome treasures by exploring in an area that no one else has searched.
The next step is to make sure you are in an area that can possibly hold a hidden treasure. Remember, if it was easy, it probably has already been found. Think about what was buried, the story behind why they buried it, and where did they travel to hide it. Look for historical clues.
Most things that were valuable, were hidden with the idea to come back and retrieve their treasure. Most of the outlaws, Spanish and more, left clues to recover their treasure. Many people get turned around in the wilderness, even when you know the area well. This is why the building of rock monuments, carving symbols in trees and rocks have been treasure hunting clues for thousands of years. To learn more about historical treasure hunting, search and explore Treasures in America’s website and blog section. You’ll be glad you did. Complete Guide to Metal Detecting.

BEST PLACE TO LOOK FOR GOLD WITH A METAL DETECTOR
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 10
The first thing you need to know is where the gold is. Don’t drive out in the middle of anywhere, hoping to find a source of gold. The mining records in every state have made this task easy for us in the modern day. Most of the old mining claims are on digital file records in the state you live.
The old miners did a lot of this work for us, so have many geologists. Not saying you may get lucky and find a new location but it would be a whole lot easier to be in an area that is baring gold.
Gold usually is present for a long stretch of land. If the old timers found gold in a specific area, chances are you may find a new area up the river, or canyon, maybe the canyon next to that one. Always be on the lookout when you are in places like that.
The old mine dumps can provide gold too. The old timers were good but with modern day technology and a good gold detector, you may find the gold that they missed in those rock piles they tossed away.
Never pass up a good opportunity to search for gold. If you are in the right area that gold has been found, even if you only have a few minutes, take out your gold metal detector and scan the area. Here’s another tip, if you can’t finish detecting an area because you don’t have enough time or the area is too big, do metal detecting in a grid pattern.
That way you can try to remember what you have already detected and picked up where you left off the next time you revisit the same area.

METAL DETECTING GEAR
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 11
The right metal detector for you depends on what you’re looking for, where you’re searching, and your budget. Generally speaking, we recommend you buy the best metal detector within your price range to make the most of this fun new hobby. Luckily, Treasures in America offers a range of metal detectors to fit any budget.
Consider how and where you plan to use your metal detector when you’re making your decision. If you plan to share this metal detector with the kids, be sure to get one light enough for them to carry. The same goes for long hikes – you don’t want to lug around a heavy metal detector if you’re walking for miles over rough terrain. If you want to use a detector over a river or in the shallow waters on the beach, get an underwater detector.
Some metal detectors are made specifically for certain types of metal, like gold metal detectors for example. If you’re hunting for gold, get a metal detector designed for gold to improve your success! If you’re looking for anything, get a less specific model that detects all metals.
Need help choosing the best fit? Our team of treasure hunting experts will gladly assist you in finding the best metal detector for your needs. – Complete guide to metal detecting 2021.

METAL DETECTING DIGGING TOOLS
When you’re choosing a metal detecting shovel, there are a few factors to think about. Consider the following before you buy your metal detecting digging tools.
Where are you digging for treasures? If you primarily hunt on the sandy ground like the beach or desert, you’ll need a different kind of shovel than someone digging through packed, wet earth or rocky ground.
Consider the areas where you plan to go treasure hunting when purchasing digging tools. Your shovel needs to be sturdy enough to dig through whatever type of soil you plan to hunt near. Factors like vegetation, roots, type of soil, weather, and more should come into play. There are some versatile tools that will work on a variety of surfaces if you’re unsure.
Also, consider the location of where you’re digging. If you’re deep in the woods, it doesn’t matter much if you make a mess during your dig. If you’re in a park, however, people may be upset if you dig a huge, messy hole. Those digging in public may choose a smaller, more accurate digging tool to do less damage.
METAL DETECTING ACCESSORIES
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 12
There Are many different metal detector accessories, all of them are an important keys to a successful treasure hunt. Below is a list of different types of metal detecting accessories that you should consider purchasing and taking with you on every hunt. This complete guide to metal detecting will help you choose the right detector and accessories for you.
Search coils are the most vital part of your metal detector. Metal detector coils are the part of the device that actually detects metal beneath the ground. Search coils come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and types. Treasures in America offers a wide range of metal detector coils, so our customers can find the parts they need. There are different types, sizes, and shapes of metal detector coils.
The most common types of search coils are concentric search coils, mono search coils, double D search coils, and imaging search coils. Concentric coils are the most common metal detector coils. They consist of two circular coils, one inside the other. The outside coil transmits the electric current, and the inside coil receives the response. Concentric coils are versatile and work well when detecting metals, as they have a symmetrical and balanced field.
Mono search coils are not quite as common, as they are only used on pulse induction metal detectors.
These have both the receiver and transmitter on one coil. Mono coils have improved depth and sensitivity, but don’t work as well in mineralized areas that require better differentiation. Double D search coils are shaped like two back-to-back D’s, and they are good for use in areas with heavily mineralized soils. The shape of this coil gives it better ground canceling capabilities, so there is reduced interference from ground signals. DD coils are often used for relic metal detecting. Complete guide to metal detecting 2021.

METAL DETECTING SECRETS
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 13
Here’s the best metal detecting secret that you’ll ever hear, have fun and enjoy your hobby! It does not matter if you don’t have the best metal detector. Don’t feel let down when you see someone make a post on social media with a great discovery and you came home empty handed that day.
The adventure is in getting outdoors and spending quality time with your friends and family. It’s also learning something new and planning for that next trip on the weekend when you are at work all week. Do not let things get you down. Stay focused on the adventure and everything will be just fine.
“The greatest treasure I have found in life is feeling alive. That is what treasure hunting and metal detecting have done for me. I spend most of my time planning my next trip and learning all the information I can about the treasure we are hunting for. I have made some awesome friends and I have involved my family in a new hobby. What’s my greatest treasure? Family, friends, passion, and drive. I have never come home empty-handed after a hunt.” said Timothy C Draper, Historical Treasure Hunter, Founder and CEO of Treasures in America
METAL DETECTING LAWS AND REGULATIONS
STATE & COUNTY LAWS AND CODE OF ETHICS WHEN TREASURE HUNTING
It doesn’t matter what state you live in, Delaware, Wisconsin, Florida, every state and county is different when it comes to treasure hunting and metal detecting laws. You will want to check online or make a few phone calls to make sure you abide by the laws of your area. I will give you one hint on this, private property does have laws you have to abide by. If you can find treasure on your property or someone else’s (by permission), you are set!
This is one thing that I hope to change in my lifetime. I would like to work with you and go to our congress and politicians and change the way treasure hunting permits are received. Many treasure hunters apply for permits and get denied. This leads to looting and illegal treasure hunts and much of the history and records are never known by professionals.
I feel that if permits were given out more often to responsible and experienced treasure hunters, the treasure hunters can share their knowledge and discoveries with archeologists and anthropologists and that lost history could be examined and documented. Please do your research and treasure hunt and metal detection the right way.
Some states are much stricter than others. If you live in states like Florida, Texas, Oregon, Oklahoma, please search for your local laws. Treasure hunting laws are very important and if you don’t abide by them, you can go to Federal Prison for a very long time. I like to work with my local law so I can learn the ins and outs.
If you would like to join the fight in making your state easier to obtain a treasure hunting permit, reach out to me. I feel that I will be fighting the limitations for the rest of my life. I plan on making this a political issue because I feel that things can be better for treasure hunters and the treasure hunting laws and regulations. Always, always follow the laws.
